Somewhere Over the Snowpack, Bluebirds Fly...Right into My Yard

Wednesday, January 3, 2018
Are you ready for something fun?  I feel like it's time to get back to the business of this blog now. How 'bout you?  With my Favorite Businesses of 2017 post out of the way (be sure you don't miss that one) and a little review in the form of your Top 10 Favorite Posts, I think it's time to share a little beauty and nature with you all.  Although I was feeling a little overwhelmed and burned out by the time I finished my holiday marathon of posts, and feeling a little like I might just shut down the blog....some rest, relaxation and holiday fun recharged my batteries and made me realize I'm not ready to hang up my hat just yet.  In fact I've got several posts waiting in the wings beginning with this one....no pun intended....which I've been anxious to share.  For the first time - ever - some bluebirds have found their way into our yard!  Normally our property is a little too confining, surrounded by a lot of trees, to attract bluebirds.  I'm not sure if it's the absence of a couple of large trees we had taken down which opened up the yard or maybe just the frigid weather that drew them to the feeder activity, but I was thrilled to look out last week and see them.

The've continued to come around every day for the past 6 days and seem to be enjoying the mealworms John quickly ran out to buy the first day we spotted them.  Unlike other birds who relish sunflower seeds or thistle, bluebirds live on insects and earthworms and berries.  Insects are pretty scarce in the frigid tundra we're living in these days - and who can blame them!  This weather isn't fit for man, beast or bugs!

When you're really hungry and there's no bugs, you make do.  And Birdacious Bark Butter from Wild Birds Unlimited is protein too!   You can't be picky when it's below freaking zero out!

As you can see, they're not shy about new feeders!

Heated water sources come in handy too!

This next group was taken this morning when it was barely daylight.  Sorry for the grainy shots.

Aren't they gorgeous!!! I'm going to get a bluebird house hung asap and cross my fingers and say my prayers that these beauties hang around. No matter how many bird species I have creating a feeding frenzy at my feeders, these bluebirds just make my day. Speaking of birds....stick around. This cold weather has kept me in and has kept the feeders hopping with all sorts of hungry feathered friends who have been so cooperative about posing for their turn in the blog. I'll be sharing them soon. In the meantime, I hope I've brought a little warmth and joy into your day. Don't forget it's easy to share the blog using the social media words that appear at the bottom of this post. 1. Gail, Welcome to the world of bluebirds! Excited for you! I have had bluebirds in the backyard for 20+ years. I live in Schodack. In the past I was active in monitoring the NYS bluebird trail, a wonderful experience that taught me a lot. Over the years I have had many successful nestings,(Have 3 boxes) and then some sad ones with losses. You may want to check out the NYS Bluebird Society online. Wishing you good luck with your bluebirds, and
hopeful you will have even more!! Judy McNamara email: bluebirds_12033@yahoo.com
