Enjoying the Colors of Autumn in Beautiful Schoharie County

Schoharie County has held a piece of my heart for longer than I can remember.  My parents loved Schoharie County and first introduced me to it, and years later we took our kids.  There's so much to love about this rural oasis, located 1/2 way between Albany and Cooperstown in the Mohawk Valley.

Schoharie has a long history of agriculture production, and one of my grandmother's favorite things to do when visiting Schoharie was to visit the many farm stands for fresh produce.  Too many to mention, her favorites were Shaul's Farm Stand and the Carrot Barn.  If she were alive today, she'd be in her glory with the many options she'd have available.  Of course there's well-known stops like Howe Caverns, Beekman 1802, the NYS Power Authority Visitor Center in Blehnheim.  My dad loved that place and if you're interested in learning about electricity and hydropower, it's a great place to visit.

While there's tons to see and do in Schoharie County, you probably won't be surprised to learn that my favorite thing to do is search out the narrowest dirt roads and cool barns and there's never a shortage of those!  To add to the scenic beauty the county offers in any season, this year's vivid foliage was the frosting on my cake last weekend.  Did you know that the name Schoharie came from a Mohawk word meaning 'floating driftwood'?  And that was long before the 2011 flood caused by Hurricane Irene.

I know you'll find so much to do regardless of what your favorite pastimes are, and if you actually prefer to leave the comfort of your car.  If you're like me though and prefer a scenic drive....just explore and let your GPS get you back on the main roads.

Thanks for stopping by.  I still have a couple more road trips to share.  Next time on the blog will be the beautiful Hudson Valley where I'll take you to Hillsdale and Copake.  You won't want to miss it.  For more blogs about our trips to Schoharie, check out my blog Directory.  Take care, God Bless and go enjoy life as YOU see it!
