Shouting the Praises of Our Favorite Businesses of 2025

Excellence is not a skill.  Excellence is an attitude.  -Conor McGregor

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but excellence in business today is not always easy to find.  In fact the simple art of getting a contractor to call you back is not as easy as it used to be.  It's for these reasons that I like to take advantage of having an outlet to shout the praises of the excellent contractors I've had the pleasure of using this year.  Good help is hard to find and all of the businesses I'm including in this year's "Best Business Blog" have not only delivered excellence, but they've done so with a good attitude, dependability and consistency.  I hope the next time you're in search of excellence, you'll refer to this list of great businesses.  In no particular order....

  • Mike Simmons - Mike is a semi-retired Master Plumber who works primarily in Clifton Park (except in the winter when he escapes the cold for warmer parts). Mike is no secret in Saratoga County. In fact, his name pops up on the Next Door App regularly when folks are in need of a plumber, Mike is always the first plumber recommended. He's top notch in his field, he's friendly and he's fair priced. His number is 518-894-2890.
  • Reimer - We stumbled on Reimer a little by accident this year when recommendations for JM Schwartz led us to discover that they are now partners with Reimer.  We were on borrowed time for our central AC and had become a little disenchanted with our previous company (of almost 30 years).  Reimer spent an afternoon answering our questions and figuring out the specifics of our needs.  They knew some rebates were soon to expire so they replaced our AC and furnace before that happened.  Each technician was friendly, competent and respectful of our property.  I could not be happier both with the company and the equipment they selected.  They know their stuff.  For all your HVAC needs, as the commercials say - "Get Reimer on the horn" at 518-213-3773.
  • KT Electric - (formerly owned and operated by Ken Tibbits since 1987) Brad Smith has continued the legacy of KT Electric. We've been using KT Electric since 2018.  We've used KT Electric a few times over the years, beginning with a whole house surge protector, and various other jobs around the house.  He's in big demand and one time when time was of the essence, we got our next favorite electrician. To reach KT Electric, call Brad at 518-393-8308.
  • Erik Rossi - Erik came almost on a moments notice when one of our circuit breakers flipped and we couldn't get it back on.  I was in a small panic because that one circuit cut off power to most of our second floor, including our bedrooms.  Both John and I use CPAP's at night and after referring once again to the Next Door App, I reached out to Erik who arrived within 30 min.  Erik is a licensed master electrician with 25 years of experience.  He is very familiar with the VanPatten homes that were built in the 60's & 70's and he's a really nice guy who answers his phone.  That is pretty unheard of these days.  You can reach Erik at 518-466-9862.
  • Advanced Power LLC - For residential and commercial generators, call on Advanced Power.   We had a whole house generator installed in 2009 and each year Advanced Power calls us to arrange our annual service.  Not only is it such a relief to know when the power goes out the generator kicks in within seconds, it's a relief not to have to think about when to arrange service.  They've been dependable and so has our Generac.  Located in Halfmoon, you can reach them at 518-895-2884.
  • Absolute Pest Control - Several years ago these folks found an entry point in my ridge vent that welcomed mice into our attic.  They promptly sealed that opening and I haven't had a mouse since!  I still contract them to do semi-annual inspections for possible entryways or activity, as well as treat our yard for mosquitos since we live near a protected wetland.  We love that they use environmentally friendly products.  Every technician we've had has been courteous, thorough and punctual.  For all your pest control needs, call Absolute at 518-533-3632.
  • Larry's Landscaping LLC - Started by Larry Jeram and continued now by his son, Josh, this Landscape Design and Installation company came recommended to me by my neighbor who has used their services multiple times.  We hired Larry, Josh and team to do some shrub trimming.  Skilled in all aspects of landscape work, this team works hard, shows up as promised, is fair priced and was a pleasure to work with.  I look forward to having them back in the spring.  You can call their office at 518-729-8759 or Josh's cell phone 518-859-4133.
  • Saratoga Turf Care - I really love working with family-owned businesses and Doug Smalley and his team have been mowing our property since 2017 when a medical issue took my husband out of commission for the summer.  Since then Doug's guys show up religiously the same day each week, mow, trim and blow, leaving our property looking manicured and tidy.  They do our spring and fall clean-ups and having them handle this is one of my most appreciated luxuries in life.  I will tell you, Doug is a smaller business and he limits the number of jobs he takes so that every job is done to his high standards.  He may not be taking on any new customers, but it's worth an ask if you live in the Clifton Park area.  You can reach Saratoga Turf Care at 518-371-0508.
  •  Moore's Tree Service - Located in Mechanicville NY, Moore's goal (in their own words) is simple: "to provide high-quality tree care with professionalism, integrity, and respect—for our customers, our team, and our community".  They provided all that and more when we recently hired them to remove a tree from our backyard.  Every aspect of our interaction with them, from obtaining a quote to the final clean-up of our job displayed exactly that - they were professional, punctual, respectful, thorough.  It's no wonder Moore's Tree Service is another name that comes up regularly on social media, always recommended more than any other company.  I can't say enough about how happy we were with their work.  You can reach Moore's at 518-361-2518.
  • Upstate Backflow Testing - Kieran Lynch - Kieran came recommended to me a few years ago by Doug of Saratoga Turf Care when I was frustrated that our lawn never looked good despite years of fertilizer and weed prevention.  I learned then that without proper irrigation, our sandy soil would have a tough time producing good grass.  Kieran and his team installed an irrigation system - without our lawn ever looking like one had been installed.  Since then our lawn is lush and beautiful.  Each fall Kieran comes to drain our system for the winter and is always available for any adjustments necessary.  If you've been thinking about an irrigation system, or need backflow testing, contact Kieran at 518-847-3522.
  • Auto Answers - Mike Savoca came recommended, not for autobody work which is his primary focus, but for a specialized problem with my 2014 Rav 4. It seems Ravs have a long-standing defect near their cabin air filters - a plastic grate that is easily compromised by hungry mice. Once accessible, the mice move into the air filter or the glove box or car - not just during winter months, but even in the summer. After lots of desperation followed by some research, we found a solution on You Tube but could not find any dealer or mechanic willing to make the fix. Our friend had just had some autobody work done by Mike and thought that since Mike was skilled at dismantling cars for painting, he might be able to help. Well not only was Mike familiar with the problem, he had the hardware cloth necessary for securing the grate. Thanks to Mike I have had NO mice in my car since his work and can finally drive without worrying a tiny, beady-eyed passenger might be riding shotgun. Thank God! Mike is located on Plant Road in Halfmoon and his number is 518-257-6860.
And then some favorite businesses that have kept our interest (and a little of our cash) this year that we're proud to recommend:

Our Fourth Annual Best Business List 2020

Sunday, January 10, 2021

It's become a tradition here on the blog to devote one post a year to shining the light on businesses we've used during the calendar year, businesses who have exceeded our expectations, businesses we're proud to recommend. Good help isn't always easy to find, but with the help of Angie's List and some word of mouth recommendations, we continue to be blessed with a large group of great folks to help keep life in the Welter household running smoothly. 2020 may have been a difficult year, but despite the challenges Covid presented, our favorite businesses came through when we needed them. It gives me great pleasure to share these wonderful businesses with you today.

  • All Star Plumbing - Topping our list, and making his third appearance on our Best Business List, is All Star Plumbing.   Since we found All Star Plumbing, we have enlisted Nate's expertise (as well as Ryan, his partner) to update or replace numerous plumbing fixtures around the house.  From new and better valves, shut-offs, outside fixtures, Nate has brought the plumbing in our home up to snuff and working like it should.  This year we decided to bite the bullet and pre-emptively replace our hot water heater before it leaks or dies and once again, Nate did a thorough, and covid-safe job.  From the booties he dons when he enters our home, to his home inspection and membership program, to his warrantied work, Nate takes the headache out of plumbing worries.  Friendly, punctual, and always a perfectionist, I don't know how we'd ever face a plumbing issue with anyone but All Star Plumbing.  You can trust Nate for all your plumbing needs!  https://www.facebook.com/Allstarplumbing518
  • KT Electric - (formerly owned and operated by Ken Tibbits since 1987) Brad Smith has continued the legacy of KT Electric. We've been using KT Electric since 2018.  This year we called on Brad to replace our kitchen light fixture and to once and for all replace a faulty 3-way dimmer switch in the family room.  It's no surprise KT Electric ranks high on Angie's List with over 200 A reviews.  To reach KT Electric, call Brad at 518-412-4114.
  • Absolute Pest Control -After many years of trapping a half dozen or so mice in our attic each year, we decided it was time to call in the professionals.  Josh from Absolute Pest Control came, inspected every nook and cranny in the house, basement, garage, crawl space, attic and roof and quickly determined the mice were crawling up the chimney and entering the attic through a space under our ridge vent.  Josh fixed the compromised ridge vent and left bait in all the appropriate locations of our home.  I'm happy to report we have not had one visitor since (as proven by the untouched bait and empty traps).  Their competitor, Meerkat, quoted their 'fix' in the thousands when Absolute charged hundreds.  It was a no-brainer decision.  For 25 years we've battled mosquitos in our yard because we live near a wetland.  Normally we use a Mosquito Magnet which runs on propane and attracts and catches mosquitos.  While this has done a pretty decent job, it requires a new propane tank every 3 weeks, plus other expenses, and some time investment, so this year we contracted Absolute to spray the yard (boundaries and thickly vegetated areas) for both mosquitos and ticks and I can tell you I didn't see one mosquito all season.  We are thrilled with both the success of their program and with the professionalism and courtesy of their staff.  Call Absolute Pest Control to get rid of all your unwanted pests.  Absolute Pest Control Facebook Page and https://absolutepest.com/ 518-382-5577
  • Advanced Power LLC - During every storm, winter or summer, I rest easy knowing my power will stay on and so will my heat or AC. Thanks to Advanced Power, my home has energy backup from my Generac whole house generator.  This year my daughter had a Generac generator installed by Advanced Power too.  Every year I get a call to schedule our annual maintenance and like clockwork our serviceman shows up and makes sure we're in tip top shape for the year ahead.  If you've been considering adding a whole-house generator to your home, I strongly suggest you give Advanced Power a call..http://www.advancedpowerllc.com/  It's an investment you'll never regret.
  • Mangino Buick GMC - There are few things I hate more than car shopping so when we decided it was time to replace John's 2009 Toyota Matrix, I was not looking forward to the process.  Growing up on Saratoga Lake, the Mangino family has been a familiar name in the business world.  Several of our friends are long-time customers of the Mangino's and it became clear to us quickly why.  From Anthony our salesman, to Ralph Mangino Jr. the owner and every staff member in between, we could not have asked for an easier, more friendly or professional purchase.  The entire process was simple, covid-safe, and frustration free.  Next time you're in the market for a new car, consider Mangino Buick on Route 50 in Ballston Spa.   https://www.manginobuickgmc.com/
  • Daigle's Automotive - Once again, I couldn't do our annual list without including Daigle's for our automotive repairs.  Howard and his mechanics always handle our repairs with prompt scheduling, honest diagnostics and fair pricing.  It's such a pleasure knowing I can trust a mechanic who isn't out to empty my bank account.  In fact, Howard is the opposite, always doing what's right and fair for the customer to save money whenever possible.  If you're tired of being taken and are ready for a reputable, quality service, call Howard!  He's located at 229 Vischer Ferry Road in Rexford, NY 518-383-2689.
  • Kulak's Nursery - Once again, I have to include Kulak's Nursery and Landscaping in our list because once again, they proved they're top notch in the business.  This year I decided to revamp one of my gardens, a long narrow strip that was crowded with several day lilies and other perennials.  I was envisioning a garden that would look more presentable for the majority of the season and require less maintenance and deadheading.  We contacted Pam at Kulak's because she'd done such a fabulous job picking out plants for our front landscape.  As it turned out, that day was to be her last day before maternity leave (her due date was the next day), but she happily walked us through the nursery, in the hot sun, laying out perennials in a mock garden bed.  She looked at photos I'd brought of the space and listened to the details of what I was hoping to accomplish and once again came up with the perfect choices including about a dozen perennials, a hydrangea, a spirea and some ornamental grasses.  This project took place at the beginning of September so I can't wait to see how beautiful everything looks this spring.  For healthy plants and the best customer service, I highly recommend Kulak's Nursery & Landscaping for all your gardening needs!  Located on Balltown Road at 1615 Balltown Road in Rexford NY  https://www.facebook.com/KulaksNursery
  • Green Gardener - Another repeat on our favorite list, another I couldn't live without.  In order to accomplish the big job listed above...a lot of muscle and dirt moving was necessary.  While Kulak's could have provided the manpower, I already have a gardener who I was thrilled to work with again.  Maia van Holsteijn holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture and has been building her Green Gardener business since 2018.  From lawn maintenance to pruning, weeding, plant installation and everything in between, Maia is a wonder in the garden.  I had my son-in-law dig out the majority of the long-established day lilies, but Maia dug up the rest, prepared the soil for the new plants and then planted every one of them - after she and I mapped out a pleasing design.  I am so lucky to have found her.  I'm able to keep up my overly ambitious appetite for flowers while Maia helps handle the maintenance.  If you need some help with your gardening, Maia is your girl.  She's as sweet as she is strong, a little powerhouse in a sunhat and gardening gloves.  Contact Maia at https://gogreengardener.com/
  • Vinmar Solutions - It is with mixed feelings that I share my love for this small business.  This was our first year using Vinmar for our lawn care (fertilizing, weed prevention, etc..) and I couldn't be more pleased with their service. We've tried the big names in the past and our lawn never looked good.  With Vinmar, our applications are done with patience and care, always in a timely fashion with email notifications a few days prior to their visits.  Their price is lower and their results are superior.  The bad news is that they are a small company who wants to stay small so they can continue to do a great job for their existing customers, meaning they may not be able to accept new customers.  Still, I can't share my favorite businesses without including them.  If you're in need of a lawn service, check them out....http://www.vinmarsolutionsllc.com/
  • Burnt Hills Optical - For several years now we've been using Burnt Hills Optical for our eyeglass needs.  For annual eye exams and the most expert help in choosing the right pair of glasses, the folks at Burnt Hills Optical are the best in the business.  Located on Route 50 in Burnt Hills, this business is convenient, professional and so nice to do business with. Check them out: https://www.facebook.com/burnthillsoptical and https://www.burnthillsoptical.com/
  • Saratoga Turf Care - Another awesome business that is at full capacity and not accepting new customers, but too exceptional to leave out.  Doug and his guys mow and trim our property every week in an eighth of the time it would take John to do it at a price that's less than nice dinner out.  He does our spring and fall clean ups and trims our burning bushes as needed.  While John is certainly still strong and capable of handling most of the chores these professionals handle for us, there are many things in life we'd rather be spending our time on.  I'm not ashamed to admit we'd rather take a ride in the country or play with the grandkids than maintain our lawn. It's all about priorities!
  • Mother Theresa Academy - This may not be a service business, but I need to take time this year to acknowledge the amazing job the folks at MTA do educating and nurturing kids from 3-Kindergarten.  MTA knows kids are not all the same and they work hard to help each child grow at his/her own pace, teaching values the children can use their whole life.  Beginning with chapel time each day followed by enriching programs in math, science, language, physical education, art and more, at the end of the day what I'm most impressed with is the amount of love, patience and encouragement kids get in the atmosphere throughout MTA.  Our granddaughter and now our grandson have both loved and benefited from this wonderful preschool.  In fact our first grader regularly says how much she misses MTA , her teachers, and all the fun she had there.  If you're looking for a great place that offers fulltime education and quality life lessons, look no further than Mother Theresa Academy. http://www.motherteresa.academy/
  • The Speckled Hen and Bluebird Home Decor - these are not service businesses, but they are businesses I love and frequent.  At my age, shopping isn't something that interests me, but I love decorating my home and these two shops are my go-to when I'm in need of home decor.  Maureen at the Hen and Nicolle at Bluebird provide the friendliest, most caring atmospheres for escaping our sometimes ugly world.  If you've seen my Holiday Home Tour blogs, you know I depend on these two shops for most of my holiday (and year-round) decor.  If you're not already a customer at these fun shops, what are ya waiting for?  https://www.facebook.com/thespeckledhenscotia/ and  https://www.facebook.com/Bluebirdhomedecor
  • This has been an unusual year, for sure.  Many of our regular business were closed and some places we stayed away from due to Covid, but there are a few that went above and beyond to keep their patrons safe while serving their usual fare.  We appreciate them and have tried to support them for take-out throughout this pandemic.  They are Power's Pub, Vischer Ferry General Store, King Brothers Dairy and Ravenswood Pub.
Well that's it folks, our favorite businesses of 2020.  One thing I need to point out....all of them are small and/or family businesses.  That's not the way we planned it, but in the end, I believe it makes a difference.  I'm not out to get the cheapest price, I'm looking for companies who take the time to listen to our needs and do their best to provide the best service to meet those needs, people who look at me as a person, not a source of income, people who care about my home with the same respect they have for their own.  I've found that relationship in all the businesses I share in this annual post.  I hope you'll consider them the next time you need superior service.

"Your customer doesn't care how much you know until they know how much you care."

Our Third Annual Best Business List for 2019

Thursday, January 2, 2020

It's that time again, the end of another calendar year and time to give a nod of thanks to our favorite businesses.  Good help is hard to find and we've been so fortunate to find some really great contractors and local businesses that we frequent.  I believe the best way to find good help is through word of mouth, so there's my recommendations - straight from the horses mouth - folks we used this calendar year.  Links to company websites incorporated in listing names if available.  If no website is available, phone number is included.
  • Sunshine Landscaping - in Clifton Park.  We hired them to grade and lay stone on a hill in our backyard.  Their crew did that and later came back for more landscape work, hydroseeding and such. I can't say enough about their attention to detail, work ethic and what a pleasure it was to work with each member of their team.  Details in link below.
  • Saratoga Turf Care - I include them with such mixed feelings because they are so, so good and take care of our lawn as if it were there own, but I also know in sharing this that they are in such high demand, they very rarely take on new customers.  Still.....they deserve their moment in the spotlight and Doug Smalley and his crew are the best. 518-371-0508
  • All Star Plumbing - for all of our plumbing needs, we depend on Nate at All Star Plumbing in Ballston Lake.  When it comes to plumbing, no one does it better.  Nate not only takes great care in respecting a customer's home, he knows his stuff and carries out his work efficiently and with a smile.  And he guarantees his work.  I wouldn't call anyone else!
  • Advanced Power LLC - From installation to annual maintenance of our Generac generator, Advanced Power Systems has been our company.  Each year they reach out to us to arrange for our annual service.  There's nothing more comforting when the lights go out than the roar of our generator starting up!  Heat in the winter, AC when it's thundering and 95 degrees.
  • Daigle's Automotive -  It's so hard to find a good and honest mechanic and we found both at Daigle's Automotive in Rexford, NY.  Howard and his men quickly diagnose the problem and fix it at a reasonable price.  We know when we take our cars there, we'll get an honest diagnosis, a fair-priced, and a timely repair. 518-383-2689
  • David's Tree Topping - After 24 years, it would seem we'd run out of need for tree removal (and we almost have), but thankfully in all of those years we've relied on David's for all our tree trimming and removal.  Just this year we had a bunch of trees snap during a storm, as well as having to say goodbye to a very old, diseased crab apple.  David and his crew worked tirelessly working where the crane truck couldn't go and cut up and removed the mess.  518-371-0361
  • Cornerstone Veterinary Hospital of Clifton Park - for the most compassionate and thorough care for your furry family members, we love Dr. Alan Knott, his team of veterinarians and vet techs.  Everyone from the front desk staff to the medical personnel gives pets a trauma-free, love-filled experience each and every visit.
  • Roland J. Down - for furnace and a.c. maintenance and repair, our pick for 24 years has been RJD.
For some of our favorite businesses:
So there it is, our Best Business List for 2019.  It's a list based on personal opinion and great experience so I'm hoping the next time you're in need of service, the names on this list will come to mind.  To view previous year's Best of list.....
Happy New Year!  Thanks for stopping by!  Be sure to come back soon for more Life As I See It.

Time to Say Thanks to Our Favorite Businesses and Contractors of 2018

Sunday, December 30, 2018
Here we are at the end of another calendar year!  It always amazes me how quickly these years pass, but one of my favorite parts of closing the book on the year is taking a moment to share with you my favorite businesses and contractors.  Each year I like to give a nod and a big thanks to all the folks who helped keep things running smoothly, helped make the Welter home prettier, contributed in making life easier, more organized and less work.  I hope that in doing so, you might find someone you could use in your life too.  Good help is hard to find and when I do, I like to make sure they know how much we appreciate it.  My list this year is long; I don't want to leave anyone out, so sit back and take notes as I share my 2018 Favorite Contractors and Businesses.

Miron's For Floors - After 23 years of hating our bathroom floor (those dastardly 1" x 1" tiles with discolored grout) Miron's laid beautiful Mannington Vinyl over our tile (after skim coating first) and brought our bathroom from the 1960's into the new millennium.  Dick Miron and cousin Dave made the whole process easy and enjoyable from start to finish.  No surprise here.....as Miron's has been serving the Capital Region for 70 years.  They are located on Remsen Street in Cohoes NY.  For more information: http://www.mironsforfloors.com/

Green Gardener LLC - Maia van Holsteijn, a Bachelor of Science Graduate of Iowa State Horticulture Program, provides a variety of outdoor services including spring clean-up, weeding, mowing, bulb planting, landscape design, pruning, vegetable garden design and planting, indoor plant repotting, and general yard maintenance. I enlisted Maia for a number of gardening jobs this summer beginning with dividing and transplanting a bunch of perennials, revamping a forgotten garden, weeding and some fertilizing.  Maia worked tirelessly and efficiently, regardless of the heat and humidity, and always got to me in a timely fashion.  I can't say how nice it was to be able to enjoy my gardens without having to do the work!  I highly recommend you give Maia a call at 712-240-6242 or you can email her at info@GoGreenGardener.com.  Be sure to check out her website: https://gogreengardener.com/ for more about her and her services.

Kulak's Nursery - This spring we tackled a long-overdue project of re-establishing the landscaping in the front of our house.  You may have seen the blog post about it (https://www.lifeasiseeitphotography.net/2018/05/one-yard-several-gardens-and-two.html)  Well, Pam at Kulak's was instrumental in helping us select a group of new plants and shrubs to fill a rather large area.  Not only did she have a great eye and good ear for listening to my likes and preferences in plants, Kulak's had a large variety of healthy specimens which all thrived in their new home.  I would highly recommend them for all your gardening needs.  http://www.kulaksnursery.com/  You can see the before and after of that product in the blog post (link above).

Petrecki & Son's - You'll probably recognize this name from all of my previous Best Business lists - because Mark Petrecki is one of my favorite contractors.  Mark has done a laundry list of jobs for me including a very massive and beautiful retaining wall, a sidewalk, basement window replacement, and water-sealed a leak in our foundation.  This year he expanded from his hardscape work and moved towards some soft scaping.  Mark was the lead (and only man) in our landscape project removing a couple dozen astilbes and several fern, along with some Rose of Sharon.  He then amended the soil, laid edging, planted all the new nursery plants, laid stone under the drip edge and mulch over the new plants.  Then this fall when I wanted to put up a simple little background fence, Mark made time in his schedule to build a masterpiece for me.  That's what Mark does....he takes your vague vision and combines it with your need and he weaves his magic with muscle to create something far more beautiful that you could have dreamed.  Just look at this fence.....all built one piece of lumber at a time, from scratch, from Mark's design.
Mark is a perfectionist, a disciplined hard worker and one of the best men you'll ever meet.  All of that just makes him that much harder to schedule.  So line him up now!  You can find him at https://www.facebook.com/petreckiandson/  518-858-6810.

All Star Plumbing - All you have to do is look at Nate's Facebook page, or Angie's List and you'll see I'm not alone in my rave review of All Star Plumbing.  We hired Nate this year to fix our toilet - the toilet that has been a headache for 23 years.  We'd hoped our new floor would solve our problem (a toilet that rocked on too high a flange) but the floor only worsened the situation.  Nate came to the rescue, cut the flange, replaced the parts and finally, we have a solid-seated toilet.  Nate also replaced our temperamental shower ball valve that refused to let us adjust the temperature by increments with a beautiful new hotel style handle and new faucet.  It's amazing how such a little fix can make an everyday task so much more pleasant.  Everyday I marvel at how much I can love a piece of plumbing.  Nate also snaked our drains and replaced a hose faucet.  Besides being a master plumber, Nate takes incredible care to respect your home.  Each time he enters the house he puts on booties, carries in (and out) his own towels and garbage and is punctual and polite.  I can't say enough about how much we love him.  For all your plumbing needs, All Star Plumbing is your company.  https://www.facebook.com/Allstarplumbing518/   518-312-9399

KT Electric - We found KT Electric (Ken Tibbitts) a few years ago on Angie's List.  Ken installed a whole-house surge protector and later came to replace a breaker switch in our breaker box.  Recently we called Ken for a number of jobs, from simple fixes to some more (much more) complex ones.  Ken's associates disconnected our lamppost timer which was hard-wired in the floor joists of the ceiling of the basement and installed a sensor on the lamppost.  He also replaced our double outlet in the bathroom with a six-outlet box to accommodate important things like water piks, make up mirrors, electric toothbrushes, night lights, etc...   He also rewired our bathroom fan so that we could use the light without the fan on.  Alleluia!!!  Oh it's the little things in life.   He also replaced a couple of our dimmer switches.  These were all luxury jobs.....jobs that didn't interfere with the normal running of anything yet the fixes made such a difference in our day-to-day life.  With nearly 30 years of experience, you'll want to call Ken for your next electrical need.....no job is too small.  http://www.ktelectric.org/   518-393-8308

Mayfair Jewelers - You might not expect to find a jeweler on my list, and frankly neither would I since I'm not much for jewelry.  But....this year I decided it was time to update some heirloom pieces into everyday items I could enjoy.  On the recommendation of our best friends, we headed to Mayfair in Glenville.  Cindy took a look at the pieces we had to work with, listened to the story behind them and she and Chris, our designer, went to work to make old things new again.  One of the things I had were two old wedding rings that were the division of one wedding ring of my great grandmother.  My two uncles had given them to my aunts for their wedding bands.  I had no idea of how to use them, maybe melt them and design something?  Well, when Chris noticed both were inscribed with initials and wedding dates, he knew he wanted to preserve them.  So he created a beautiful pendant which preserved the integrity of the original pieces and incorporated two diamonds from a ring of my Dad's. Cindy also helped me pick out components for another necklace and resized a couple other pieces for me.  I was so happy with how personal the service, how respectful they were of my heirlooms and how much effort was put into preserving my pieces as close to their original integrity as possible.  I highly recommend Mayfair Jewelers for all your jewelry needs.  They are located in Glenville and Latham.    https://www.facebook.com/MayfairJewelersLatham/

Daigle's Automotive - Located on Vischer Ferry Road in Rexford NY, Daigle's is an old-fashioned, friendly, personal and top-notch garage where you can get honest, fair-priced auto repairs.  At Daigle's you won't get stuck paying for a bogus diagnosis.  What you'll get is an honest diagnosis, a clear explanation of the repair needed, and the ability to walk away if you choose.  But you won't walk away because you'll be confident that you're receiving an honest diagnosis and a repair at a fair price, each and every time.  At Daigle's you'll receive the fastest and fairest service around .....whether you're a man or a woman, you'll be treated with friendly, polite service and women....you won't be afraid to get taken advantage of.  There's a reason why Daigle's has been in business since 1983!  They're that good.  For your next auto repair, call Daigle's at 518-383-2689.

DF Construction - In business since 1987, Don Frame knows his stuff.  From siding to windows and doors, Don and his team are the best.  You may remember DF Construction from one of my previous lists because they sided our house.  Don's easy going, non-pressure salesmanship is what we first fell in love with, quickly followed by his attention to detail, his qualified installers, his impeccable clean up.  This year we had Don and his guys replace the aluminum covering on our bay window which had been done by our previous window installers many, many years ago.  Don replaced the loose covering with beautiful pvc bead board and I have to say, the window never looked better.  For all your siding, window and door needs, call Don Frame at DF Construction at 518-468-1096.  Or contact him by email at donframe@bixnycap.rr.com

The Food Florist
- Now you may not think of the Food Florist as a service provider, but I beg to differ.  A couple years ago when I was bed-ridden for 7 weeks with sciatica, take out meals got pretty old pretty quick.  My wonderful hubby, who can and does do most everything, falls short when it comes to cooking so when someone told me about the Food Florist, we didn't waste time checking it out.  The Food Florist (located on Science Street in Ballston Spa and also at several local Farmer's Markets) prepares a variety of wholesome comfort foods.....chicken pot pie, Swedish meatballs, lasagna, breakfast casseroles, quiche (just to name a few)....all in portions for 2 or for a family.  She then freezes them and you, the hungry shopper, purchase them frozen to be baked at home at your convenience.  Each item is labeled with cooking instructions (so easy for even the most inexperienced cook).  Let me tell you....whether you hate to cook, whether you're too sick to cook, whether you know a new mom who doesn't have time to cook or whether you have company drop in....the Food Florist will save your day and fill your belly with freshly made food that is not highly seasoned, just tasty and wholesome.  Trish and her team also make fruit pies.  We love the blueberry and quadberry.  For a full list of her offerings, please use the links provided.  You can also find Trish at a number of pop-up sites in the area and can arrange one for your business site too.  Trish's meals make great gifts for that new mom just home from the hospital, or that shut-in who may not be up to cooking, or even just for that night you can't face the kitchen.  She saved my life and she can save yours too.  Check her out: https://www.facebook.com/foodflorist/

Staples - For your printing needs....This year I decided to convert my "Food for Thought" blog posts and family story blogs (over 40) into a word document to preserve for my grandkids.  I wanted a printed document that would remain long after I was gone and I knew that would be too cumbersome for my home printer.  I made a few phone calls and enlisted Staples to complete my project.  Easy Peasy!  I just copy and pasted my project from the blog (without formatting) into a word document, added the photos and saved. That part of the project took me about 40 hours, but the rest was a snap.  I then chose my project style on the Staples website, uploaded my file and 7 hours later had a beautiful spiral-bound, 100+ page book.  Who knew it could be so easy?  I chose to do a color print, but I will tell you the black and white version was considerably cheaper - about a 1/4 of the cost of color.  So if you've got memoirs or recipes or something you want to preserve, talk to the folks at your local Staples and have it done now!

I want to give a nod to my lawn team - Saratoga Turf Care who mows, trims and blows and keeps our property looking neat and tidy weekly.  Doug Smalley is so good he isn't able to take on new customers, but he and his men are top-notch and I don't know what we'd do without them for our spring and fall clean-ups and weekly service.   Then there's David's Tree Toppers who, for 23 years, have been our tree cutting team.  David's provides great service at a great price.  And for our lawn  and shrub fertilizing, there's Davey's Tree Service.   It takes a village and we're fortunate to have found the best in the business.  http://www.davey.com/

Since I didn't do my 'favorite shops' blog post this year, I just want to take a moment to mention some of my favorite shops:
  • The Speckled Hen - where Maureen Culver will help you fill that empty table top, corner or shelf with just the perfect vignette, greenery, pitcher, etc....Not just a store, but a friendly atmosphere you'll want to visit again and again. The Speckled Hen is located on Rt. 50 in Scotia. https://www.facebook.com/thespeckledhenscotia/
  • Bluebird Home Decor - a brand new, giant remake of Nicole's space that moved from Troy to Schenectady, filled with such a large variety of beautiful home goods, gifts and paintings by her talented mom, Shelly Broughton.  Bluebird is located on the corner of State and Lafayette St. https://www.instagram.com/bluebirdhomedecor/
  • Wild Birds Unlimited - For all your birding needs, whether you're an experienced birder or just starting out, the staff at Wild Birds are knowledgeable and friendly and will help you find the perfect equipment and answer all your birding questions.  Located on Rt. 50 in Wilton just past Best Buy, opposite the Wilton Mall. https://www.facebook.com/WBUSaratoga/
And the last but certainly not least business on my list this year is the Capital District Veterinary Referral Hospital - an emergency veterinary hospital in Latham.  We were referred to them at 9:30p.m. on Christmas Eve when our 9 yr old cat Sophie had suddenly taken ill.   We were told when we phoned that there was an hour wait and as it turned out, the wait was two hours.  Who knew so many folks would have sick pets needing emergency care in the middle of a night on Christmas Eve?  As it turns out, there were many - cats, dogs, bunnies.  It made me feel a little less guilty that we were there on such a sacred night, a night that should be filled with joy and family.  The staff at the clinic didn't seem to notice it was such a special night.  All they seemed to care about was helping the animals and worried pet owners in their hour of need.  When we finally got our turn, and Dr. Robin Karfunkel talked to us about our options and it was decided Sophie would undergo a basic blood panel.  That would hopefully help us determine what was going on that wasn't evident upon examination.  Twenty minutes later, Dr. Karfunkel returned to our room, visibly sad.  She compassionately apologized that the news was not good and definitely not the news she expected to have to deliver.  Sophie was in severe kidney failure - in fact, she had only 1/8 of her kidney function left.  Dr. Karfunkel explained that we could try heroics - keeping Sophie in the hospital for 5 or so days on dialysis and medication, but there was no guarantee that would have any effect and would cost $6-8,000, or we could put Sophie to sleep tonight.   Those were some pretty drastically different options - but options that seemed easy to choose from.  Sophie deserved to die with dignity and not be put through heroics.  From that moment, each clinic employee we came in contact with was so sincerely sorry for our loss, so compassionate, so kind.  It was obvious that our loss was also their loss and they felt as sad to see us go home with an empty carrier as we were to do so.  We left there at 1:45 a.m. on Christmas morning without our beloved kitty, with moist eyes and sad hearts, but we left feeling fortunate to have found ourselves among such caring and compassionate folks who truly care about the people and animals they serve.  That compassion didn't end that evening.  Two days later, we received this in the mail..
I hope you never need an emergency vet in the middle of the night, or on a holiday or even on a regular weekday night, but if you do, take your pet to the Capital District Veterinary Referral Hospital at 222 Troy Schenectady Road in Latham.  You'll be glad you did.

Good help is hard to find.  I hope my list of favorite contractors and businesses will help you on your next project.  Thanks to all who made it to this year's list. I'm sure there may have been one or two I missed.  We feel blessed to have almost always been fortunate enough to come upon such quality folks to help us in our time of need.  In the case of this year's list....these folks are of the highest quality, integrity and just kind and decent human beings.  What more can one ask for when hiring help.....or making friends?  That is how I feel about all of the folks on this year's list....people I like and respect, people we trust to handle our needs in the most competent and fair way, people who get it right and don't stop until they do.  That's a big testimony and these folks all deserve it.  I hope you are lucky enough to have your own list of wonderful contractors who are there when you need them and that you'll be inspired to take a moment to thank them for their service.

Best of 2017 .... Sharing My Favorite Businesses and Contractors

Saturday, December 30, 2017
And another one bites the dust...another year, that is.  Is it just me, or does everyone feel like these years go by so fast?  2018...yikes!   Saying goodbye to another year brings a whole boatload of emotions for me, but that's another blog.  Speaking of blog...after my Christmas extravaganza, a whirlwind of epic proportions with 15 posts in November and 5 in December, I can honestly tell you that I seriously needed a break.  Thank you for your patience as I took a couple weeks away from the computer and social media.  During those weeks I strongly considered putting the blog to rest - for good, but after some much needed time away I've reconsidered that idea and decided I'd miss it too much to hang it up permanently.  Besides....I have one more end of the year post that must be done and that's my Best Business Wrap Up.

All year long one of the things I enjoy doing on the blog is showcasing businesses I discover and patronize....shops, restaurants, etc...  Back in 2016 I ended the year with a Best Of list of businesses and contractors I couldn't live without.  Today's post is another edition of that....great folks in the 518 whose services we've used and loved.  It's not easy finding quality, reputable people, but I'm lucky to have several who I'm happy to recommend.   So without further ado....here they are in no particular order:

  • Petrecki & Son's LLC - Although Mark Petrecki's truck reads Stone & Masonry Specialist, Mark's talents are pretty extensive.  We've used Mark's services for retaining walls, sidewalks, and foundation resurfacing and painting and more...too much more to list.  When the Northeast winter prevents him from his outside jobs, Mark keeps busy with tile jobs and other inside remodeling work  He's branching out in the next year to expand his services to a little soft scaping, property management and much more.  Mark is not just a perfectionist; he's honest, fair and has an eye for creating a finished product even more beautiful than the one you might have imagined.  He's also one of the nicest men you'll ever meet.  For more information on Mark and his services...https://www.facebook.com/petreckiandson/
  • Kavalla Clean - We discovered Kavalla Clean last September when our daughter and son-in-law bought their home in Clifton Park.  We hired Chris Kavalla to do a general top-to-bottom cleaning, as well as carpet shampoo before move-in and boy, were we thrilled.  Chris and his team use only green cleaning products that are biodegradable and made from naturally sourced materials. Both of my girls have enlisted Chris' service again and like the first time, they were very happy with the results.  This year I reached out to Chris again for another reason.  The Floyd Warriors had a family in need.  In case you've never heard of Floyd Warriors - they're a group of amazing volunteers that help newly diagnosed cancer patients get through the early months of treatment.  One of the things the family mentioned they were in need of was a little housecleaning.  I contacted Chris hoping I could pay for his services for this family but Chris stepped up, way, way up, and provided his services pro bono!   Now that's a class act and a huge heart.  Whether you want a one-time clean, weekly cleaning or a deep clean, be sure to contact Kavalla Clean for all your cleaning needs:   https://www.facebook.com/KavallaClean/ and http://www.kavallaclean.com/
  • Hanley Movers - Like Kavalla Clean, we found Hanley Movers when our daughter needed movers to move their belongings from storage to their new home.   Tom Hanley proved his worth right from the get-go when he was able to get the moving truck backed up Laura's very steep driveway, only making a tiny rut in the grass.  Cars often shy away from driving up the driveway, but not Tom Hanley.  As if we weren't already impressed, Tom and his team made quick and careful work unloading a fully packed truck in a short time, all the while handling every piece of furniture and every box as if it were their own.  Nice guy and pleasant and efficient team.  To contact Hanley Movers:   http://www.hanleymovingcompany.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/Hanley-Moving-Company-Inc
  • David's Tree Topping Service - For as long as we've owned our home, David's Tree Topping Service has been our company of choice for tree cutting and removal.  Over the course of 22 years, David and his crew have taken down at least 8 trees for us.  Always the best price combined with outstanding, careful removal and clean up, I know when I hire David's I'll get a job well done at a fair and reasonable price.  If you live in the Clifton Park area, give David a call at 518-371-0361.  In business since 1972, David brings a lifetime of experience to every job.
  • B.K. Custom Services - There's so much I can say about Barry!  Barry is a jack of all trades and a master at many.  His expertise is custom cabinetry but Barry can remodel a kitchen, or a bathroom, hang a door, install a floor, fix a toilet, you name it, Barry can do it and if he can't, he's not afraid to say so.  We've had Barry remodel our kitchen and bathroom and this year he replaced and hung every door in our house except for the front door.  That included 19 doors (interior doors, closet doors, and two exterior doors.  He painted them too.  Barry is also a perfectionist.  He arrives promptly each day, works continuously through the day and stays on your job until it is complete. He's trustworthy and dependable.  I don't know what I'd do without him.  Barry is located in Saratoga Springs and can be reached at 518-581-5900.
  • Brad Elliott Chiropractic - Sometimes our homes aren't the only thing that needs fixing.  I've suffered with a few bouts of sciatica this year and I know I got back on my feet each time thanks to the expert treatment I received from Brad Elliott.  Brad isn't one of those chiropractors that will keep you running endlessly.  He fixes what ails you, recommends exercises to get you back on our feet and keep you there, and encourages healthy lifestyle changes that will enable you to keep mobile.  Since my first 7 week incapacitating bout of sciatica, I've been doing monthly maintenance visits and can definitely feel the difference in my spine health.  If you're in need of a tune-up, give Brad a call at 518-383-4889.
  • Mom & Pop's Cafe - I've already told you about Mom & Pop's when I featured them in their own post earlier this year but I really need to mention them in this list. Besides being a great place for breakfast or lunch, located on Rt. 67 right next door to Curtis Lumber, you'll be hard-pressed to leave this home style cafe hungry.  Freshly made meals in very generous quantities, the only thing better than your meal at Mom & Pop's is the delicious foods from their catering service.  We got most of the food for my daughter's baby shower from them and people are still talking about it.  From wrap platters to fruit platters, appetizers to hot dishes, everything is fresh and delicious.  Whether you're looking for a yummy meal or looking to feed your next event, give Mom & Pop's a call.  https://www.facebook.com/Mom-Pops-Cafe-Catering
  • The Food Florist - This is one I've been meaning to devote a whole post to, and will eventually, but in the meantime.   During my 7-weeks of sciatica, I could barely roll over in bed.  Cooking wasn't even on my radar.  After a few weeks of take-out, someone told me about the Food Florist and saved my (and John's) life.  The Food Florist (Trish and her team) cook fresh, wholesome meals using locally sources ingredients.  What's different about the Food Florist is that her meals are sold frozen so you can bring home casseroles and pies and cook them whenever you need them.   From chicken pot pie to lasagna, Swedish meatballs to breakfast casseroles, quiche and fruit pies.....let me tell you, it was awesome to eat fresh, delicious home cooked meals during my recovery.  Instead of sending a new mom flowers, bring her a few frozen casseroles.  Know someone convalescing?   Take them food that requires no prep, just a pre-heated oven and voila....a hot meal.  And guess what....you can even get meals portioned for two!!!!  So whether you're looking to feed a family or just you and your sweetie....the Food Florist has you covered.  I love their blueberry french toast casserole and their blueberry crumb pie, but their chicken pot pie is always yummy too. The Food Florist is located at 3 Science Street in Ballston Spa but can also be found at local Farmer's Markets.  She also does pop-up deliveries at local businesses.  For more information: https://www.facebook.com/foodflorist/ and http://thefoodflorist.com/
  • VideoView Productions - This is perhaps the business that most plucks a sentimental chord for me.  Ed Deet of Video View Productions does a most amazing job of restoring and converting old media onto dvd's.  We enlisted Ed's services this past year to convert some vhs tapes, some super 8mm tapes and some very, very old movies from the 60's.  I can't begin to tell you what it was like to be able to relive those special times, to see my grandparents alive again.  Don't send your precious media out into the mail....drive it down to Ed in Waterford and let him handle your memories with his tender touch and very reasonable prices.  You'll be so glad you did.  For more information:  https://www.facebook.com/VideoView-Productions and to read my dedicated post about VideoView Productions: http://www.lifeasiseeitphotography.net/2017/05/what-if-we-could-go-back-in-time-and.html
  • Chatbooks - This is a slightly different service, but still one I want to mention.  For those of you who use Instagram....you're probably like the rest of us who rarely print photos anymore.  Chatbooks (available at the App Store) is an amazing company that prints your Instagram photos in little brag books.  After every 60 photos you upload, for $10 they print a 6" x 6" soft cover book for you.  Each photo is dated too!  You can upgrade for a fancier book and you can also delete photos you don't want included before printing.  Now all those family photos or vacation photos will have a forever home and can be shared with all your friends and relatives!
  • Favorite Lawn Service - Davey's Tree, not the cheapest but an excellent company for both tree cutting and lawn service.  We have them fertilize our lawn and trees.  Top notch employees, knowledgeable professionals, respectful of property.  http://www.davey.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/DaveyTree/
  • Favorite Lawn Care - Saratoga Turf Care - we enlisted Doug's Smalley's services when John was incapacitated last summer and fall and were so happy with their work, we never let them go.  For mowing and spring/fall yard clean up, Saratoga Turf Care is affordable and dependable. Doug rarely takes on new customers, but if you're in the Clifton Park area, he's worth a call  518-371-0508.
  • Favorite Salon - Spa at Chelsea Park - for hair, nails, massage, lashes, and more, the Spa at Chelsea Park is a beautiful place to pamper yourself.   https://www.facebook.com/thespaatchelseapark/
  • Favorite Car Repair Shop - Daigle's Automotive - We've used Daigle's in the past and this year when our regular mechanic became ill, we went back to Daigle's and were reminded what great service and fair prices they offer.  Located on Vischer Ferry Road in Rexford, you'll get honest diagnostics and great customer service at Daigle's Automotive.  518-383-2689
  • Favorite Church - Shenendehowa United Methodist Church - I visited this church for the first time almost 2 yrs ago and have been attending ever since.  If you're looking for a place where you can reconnect, a place to grow in your spiritual journey, a place to be surrounded by warm and welcoming people and be inspired and encouraged...this is the church for you.  This is a busy church with loads of opportunities to get connected for both young and old. The youth at SUMC stay connected and participating straight through their teens; in fact that was one of the first things that impressed me...the huge number of kids and teens.  You know they're doing something right when the teens keep coming.  You can even watch their services live or after- the-fact online.   If you need a little more God in your life, Pastor Lee, Brother Paul and everyone at Shen Methodist will have you feeling closer to God in no time.  For more information: https://www.facebook.com/Shenendehowa-United-Methodist-Church- and http://www.shenumc.org/
So, that's it....my favorite businesses of 2017.  I still love the businesses I wrote about in 2015 and you can read about them HERE.  I hope you'll stay tuned....I have some beautiful blog posts coming up, full of some of the photos you always love.  Thank you for your support.   I have so many faithful readers.  I promise to keep things positive and upbeat in the New Year and I intend to share all the beautiful things that come my way in Life As I See It.  Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year!
