Sailin' Around Saugerties

If you liked the Catskill cats, the Coxsackie owls and the Cairo bears......you're going to love the Saugerties sailboats.

We had a chance to check out the Sailin' Around Saugerties exhibit a couple weeks ago after we visited the Mahayana Temple in South Cairo.  I wasn't sure what to expect since it was our first visit to Saugerties.  Living in a tourist area of our own, I forget how popular other parts of NY are for tourists!  Saugerties is definitely a busy place.  I'm not sure if that had to do with the fact we visited on a weekend, but the traffic was quite busy compared to our previous hunting expeditions.  We didn't have a ton of energy left after roaming around the Temple grounds, and the heat had pretty much drained us so our capture of the Saugerties sailboats was limited to drive-by shootings - from the car, in traffic.  You'd think that would have resulted in disappointing captures, and some of the shots are not as crisp as I'd hoped, but we did pretty well, considering.

Saugerties is located between the base of the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River.  Settled by the Dutch, it was purchased by Governor Edmund Andros from the Esopus Sachem Tribe in 1677 for piece of cloth, a shirt, a loaf of bread and maize. No other community in the community shares its name.  (information borrowed from the https://discoversaugerties.com/ website.)
Saugerties boasts a total of 41 wooden sailboats, scattered all over town.  I was disappointed that I couldn't find a printed map in town, even at one of the sponsoring shops, but we managed to find 27 using the online map on my cell phone.  Had this been a dedicated trip and we'd had a printed map, finding all 41 would have been achievable.  I think you'll agree there's some seriously talented artists in Saugerties.

Some of these have amazingly beautiful details not captured in the photos!

Look closely at this one....

This one....unbelievable!

This isn't intended to help you locate the sailboats, but it'll give you an idea of where the sailboats are located.

Gorgeous, right?  So much imagination and so much artistic talent!  Saugerties is a beautiful little town filled with interesting shops, cafes and waterfront and of course, the Saugerties Lighthouse.  There's plenty to see and do while you're there!  The sailboats are on display until September.  They'll be auctioned off at the Sailin' Around Saugerties Gala on September 15th.  For more information you can check out the following links:
