Nature Offers a Spring Greeting at Landis Arboretum

Every April, God rewrites the book of Genesis.............author unknown.

Last month I did an 8-part series entitled, If Spring Came In a Store because after the long and frigid winter we all endured everyone was craving spring.  That series temporarily satisfied our cravings and gave us a taste of what was bound to come and finally.....it has come!  I love spring.... from the increased hours of daylight to the brighter, warmer sunshine.  I love watching the buds on the trees that swell a little fatter each day until suddenly tiny leaves emerge from dormant branches.  I love the activity of the wildlife as squirrels and chipmunks play chase around and around, up trees and down.  I love watching the displays of courtship between the birds at my backyard feeders.  In spring, each new day offers new surprises, new gifts to be unwrapped.  Life is renewing all around us and we are reminded that even after the depths of winter, new beginnings are promised to us.

One of my favorite places to witness the evolution of spring is at Landis Arboretum in Esperance, NY.  A fellow photographer friend shared this treasure with me a couple years ago and what a treasure it is!  I blogged about Landis before, so if you're interested in the history and a closer look at the arboretum, you can check out the post using this link: http://gwfirecracker.blogspot.com/2014/04/in-previous-blog-post-i-mentioned.html   There you'll find a map of the many trails and lots of photos too.  Everywhere you look as you wander around Landis you'll find signs of spring and that's just what we found during our visit yesterday.

At Landis one can enjoy a variety of feathered friends.

Aside for swallows, red-winged blackbirds, and bluebirds, we've spotted Eastern Towhees, Eastern bluebirds, Yellowbellied Sapsuckers and more.  If you're a gardener, Landis Arboretum contains labeled specimens of over 2000 trees, shrubs, and herbaceous perennials.  Whether you want to wander the many trails or just sit on a bench and quietly observe the view, Landis offers something for everyone.
